About the Teacher
Music has been an integral part of
my life since childhood. Born in Edinburgh, I grew up in Scotland and
attended a Rudolph Steiner school which helped shape my teaching
philosophies. I attained Advanced Level through the Associated Board of the
Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), and gained awards for piano solos at the
Edinburgh Music Festivals.
After coming to Australia, I was piano accompanist for a Physical Culture
school in Gymea, NSW, and then accompanist for several years at the Bryan
Lawrence School of Ballet in Dickson, ACT, which was later re-established in
Woden as the National Capital Ballet School.
For over two decades I performed extensively as keyboards player both
locally and interstate: in cabaret trio Mainstreet, rock band Cobra, top
forty band Tracks, country duo DX-7 and pub band The Surrogates, to name
just a few. Amongst my engagements as solo artist, I regularly led lively
singalong sessions at The Wicked Lady in Belconnen, The Tumbled Tree
Restaurant in Queanbeyan, and also, when I lived in Kiama, at The Jamberoo
Pub.
Several years ago I took a break from the late-night lifestyle and began
teaching piano. At the same time, my love of classical music was rekindled,
and I finally found my niche in life. I truly love what I do which, I feel,
is not so much instruction as showing my students the best way to develop
their innate skills and bring out the music that is within us all.
I attend local concerts and performances to nurture my interest in many
different genres of music, and enjoy jamming with other musicians. When time
permits I compose
music for piano and small ensembles and have given public
performances of some of my compositions.
I'm keenly aware of the different abilities and ever-changing needs of my
students. My piano studio provides a relaxed, non-competitive learning
environment for students of all ages and musical tastes, where creativity,
performance and confidence levels are enhanced through a combination of
private individual tuition and friendly, informal workshops.
My aim is to foster a genuine and enduring love of music, for only in this
way can any real progress be made in the theory and practice of music!
Best wishes,
